Following an appeal for help from the Yellarloo Girl Guides Support Group as guest speakers at one of our Friday meetings, RC Toowoomba Garden City offered to provide the “man power” to repair and repaint the exterior of their Guide Hut. Rather a major undertaking however, as co-ordinator of my first project of this nature since joining RCTGC – I was totally blown away by the commitment of our members to get the job done and provide much needed assistance to a local organisation. Over the course of both days of two weekends in October’13, with the assistance of a number of guides and guide families and under the expert guidance of our very special, Peter Mac – we
- Washed the building down and cleaned the gutters
- Scraped, sanded, gap filled and replaced window puty
- Replaced door frames, window frames, the back door and some boards
- Undercoat – twice in bare patches
- Top coat – also twice.
- Consumed plenty of morning tea and lunch
- Climbed ladders and splashed paint on those working under us
- Made some new friends
- Did an absolutely amazing job and transformed the guide hut
- Found skills we didn’t know we had (and may care to forget again)
- Showed the young guides present how Rotarians apply the principle of “Service above Self”
- Sown the seed for future Rotary members.
Above all had lots of fun, laughs and companionship.
Thank you to participating members.
